The full explanation

Maharashtra raised its professional tax return-filing threshold to Rs. 1,00,000. The figure determines filing frequency rather than liability: it decides whether a PTRC holder files monthly or annually, based on the tax deducted in the preceding year.

An establishment whose annual PTRC liability falls below Rs. 1,00,000 files annually. Above it, monthly filing applies. Liability itself is unaffected, so the deduction from each employee continues exactly as before; only the return cycle changes.

This is worth checking because the threshold moves establishments between cycles as headcount changes, and the change is not announced to you. An establishment that grew past the threshold during a year moves to monthly filing for the next, and one that shrank moves the other way. Neither transition produces a prompt from the system, so a growing establishment can miss several monthly returns while continuing to file annually as it always has.

The due date changed too, and recently. Notification No. VyaKar-2026/C.R.4/Taxation-3 dated 28 February 2026 amended Rule 11(3), advancing the monthly deadline from month-end to the 15th with effect from March 2026. The annual return is due by 15 March.

So a Maharashtra establishment now has two things to get right that both changed independently: which cycle it belongs in, and when within that cycle the return falls due. Review the preceding year's PTRC total against the Rs. 1,00,000 threshold at the start of each year, and set the calendar reminder to the 15th rather than month-end. Note also that the filing threshold and the deduction rules are set by different instruments, so a change to one does not imply a change to the other and each has to be tracked separately.
